2. Tuner Accuracy and Limitations

The online violin tuner on this site uses browser-based pitch detection via the Web Audio API to estimate the pitch of your violin strings. Results are educational estimates — useful for general tuning reference — and should not be treated as precision-calibrated measurements.

Accuracy varies depending on:

Microphone quality — built-in laptop and phone microphones may underperform at the lower frequency range, potentially affecting G3 (196 Hz) detection
Background noise — competing audio frequencies in the room interfere with fundamental frequency identification
Bow technique — bow pressure, bow speed, and contact point all affect the pitch of a sustained note. The tuner detects the pitch you are actually producing; if bow pressure is causing deviation, the reading accurately reflects that
String condition — old, worn, or corroded strings produce a noisier harmonic series and less stable pitch detection. New strings stretch and go flat repeatedly during their first hours of play
Browser type — Chrome on desktop provides the most consistent results
Room acoustics — reverberant rooms introduce reflections that can affect the detected signal

3. Not a Substitute for Professional Guidance

Violin teacher. The tuner can confirm whether your open strings are in tune. It cannot teach bowing technique, left-hand position, intonation development, musicality, or any other aspect of violin playing. A qualified violin teacher is irreplaceable for learning correct technique and avoiding habits that cause injury or limit progress.

Luthier or instrument technician. This website provides general guidance about fine tuners and pegs. Significant adjustments to peg fit, string after-length, soundpost position, or other structural elements of the instrument should be performed by a qualified luthier. Incorrect peg adjustment is a common cause of string breakage; incorrect structural adjustments can damage the instrument.

Instrument setup. If your violin consistently tunes correctly on open strings but plays sharp or flat in higher positions, the issue may be with the instrument’s setup — nut height, fingerboard curvature, or string after-length — rather than the tuning itself. A luthier assessment is appropriate in this case.
